Hansdip Singh Bindra (PRESIDENT)
Being born and raised in Kolkata, India, Hansdip Singh Bindra has had an affinity for the arts from a young age. He was constantly exposed to the finest cinema and music throughout his childhood by his family and friends. As a Sikh Punjabi living in Kolkata, he got the best of both worlds: the rich cultural experience of traditional Sikh Punjabi practices while being immersed by the works of Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit Ray and other legendary Bengali artists. This unique upbringing, planted a seed for his future endeavors.
Hansdip moved to USA for his undergraduate degrees at Lafayette College on full-scholarship. He later went on to get his graduate degree from Seton Hall University. Having successfully establishing himself as a Technology Entrepreneur by the early 2000s, he decided to focus his time and energy on his passions: Activism and the Arts.
He started by working as a Civil Rights Activist in association with The Sikh Coalition in New York and SALDEF in Washington, DC. Hansdip was one of the key players in the Post 9/11 Civil Rights Movement and continues to be an active advocate for Equal Rights.
On the artistic side, Hansdip rapidly made a presence on the New York City theatre and film scene. He has been in the Organizing Committee and the Marketing Chairperson of the Sikh International Film Festival in NYC since 2008. He also has been an avid contributor and supporter of the other New York City International film festivals such as SAIFF and NYIFF.
In 2011, Hansdip partnered up with internationally renowned actor/musician Samrat Chakrabarti to start their own production company: LAUGHistan. It is a production company dedicated to bringing contemporary works of THEATER, FILM and MUSIC into the mainstream with a strong emphasis on preserving authenticity.
As President of LAUGHistan, Hansdip started out by producing a trailer for an original TV Pilot called “Sikhs and the City”. The trailer has gotten tremendous press and coverage. The TV Pilot is currently in development.
In the winter of 2012, LAUGHistan produced the New York Independent Theater Awards nominated, first Indian-American full-length off Broadway musical – “BUMBUG The Musical” by Samrat Chakrabarti and Sanjiv Jhaveri.
